Contact your Senators

“I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do. What I can do, I should do. And what I should do, by the grace of God, I will do.”
— Edward Everett Hale

Red’s Trading Post and various and sundry gun bloggers and activists are urging everyone to contact the Senate to insist upon a “NO” vote on Micheal Sullivan confirmation as director of BATFE.

I’m sure most of my readers also read some of the other blogs that have been talking about this so I’m basically just jumping on the bandwagon, but as an avowed activist, it is a worthy bandwagon upon which to leap.

Many people won’t do this just because it seems hopeless. It seems like our voice is lost among the cacophony of politics as usual.

The bottom line is that it is only hopeless BECAUSE we feel it is so. If all of the people who care about this issue actually takes the 5 minutes or so to send the letters, it BECOMES hopeful. If enough people send letters, they will take heed. It is only the defeatist attitude of “they won’t listen to me, I’m just wasting my time” that encourages our employees to ignore us.

We MUST take action when called upon or we have no one to blame but ourselves when Sullivan’s aggressive “enforcement” shuts down more and more law abiding gun businesses…including the ones that YOU patronize.

OK. Off the soapbox.

In order to make this easy, the GOA even provides a handy-dandy tool which is very easy to use.

Here is the letter I sent to my legislators. Much of it purloined from David at The War on Guns. I don’t think he’ll mind me borrowing his work and I definitely don’t so feel free to plagiarize at will:

Dear Senator,

I urge you to vote “no” on confirmation of Michael Sullivan as Director of the BATFE.

His record as acting director, and in other posts through his career, has demonstrated his total disdain for fair and equal treatment of the citizens he serves.

He has a record of heavy-handed prosecutions of minorities and insisting on prosecutions that even Federal Judges agreed were inappropriate. He also has a history of ignoring the advice and undermining the efforts of his subordinates to the point that dozens of career US Attorneys resigned their posts under his watch. He has a record of cronyism in hiring friends and fellow land owners over more suitable candidates.

The BATFE under his watch has engaged in blatant harassment and arbitrary judgments against lawful, law abiding businesses. Specific instances include the case of the “Akins Accelerator”, KT Ordnance and Red’s Trading Post among others.

Mr. Sullivan is NOT a suitable candidate for this posting and I urge you to vote against confirmation.

Please let me know what you intend to do.
