I guess we’ll be looking for some new neighbors

The house behind us was foreclosed last year. It sat empty for a long time but a couple of months ago a “family” moved in. I don’t know if they bought it or if someone else bought it and rented it to them…neither here nor there.

I put “family” in quotes because they were a little strange. The oldest one I ever saw there was probably early 20’s. There were always 7 or 8 or 10 kids around and most of the time there were several young (age 19 – 25) men hanging around.

They weren’t terrible neighbors, but they weren’t particularly pleasant either. When they were home (most of the time) they were either in the back yard with the kids screaming, or they were in the house, which was evidenced by the constant “thumpa-thumpa” in the atmosphere and vibrating the windows of the neighborhood. They did shut it down at a decent hour in the evening though, so, although it was a bit annoying, it wasn’t anything to get too worked up over.

My backyard privacy fence needs some maintenance and a couple of Saturdays ago, I happened to be in the backyard working on something and some of the neighbor tribe was in their back yard.

I called one of the young men over to the fence and asked if the “man of the house was around”. He got a smug look on his face and bluntly said “no”. I asked if he would be there later on. “No.”

Apparently, he thought I was going to complain about the kids or music or something. Perhaps I misconstrued the look on his face, but to me, it was one of those “I’m not going to tell you anything, what’cha gon’ do ’bout it” kind of looks.

Anyway, I told him that I just wanted to make sure it was OK if I entered their backyard to replace some of the slats on the privacy fence…at which point he said “I’m sure it would be OK, just knock on the door first.”

Later on that same day, I could have sworn that I smelled pot smoke wafting over the fence, but I wasn’t sure enough to worry about it and, hey…what you do in the privacy of your own backyard is none of my business as long as it isn’t violating my rights.

Well….right after lunch today I happened to look out the back window and what did I see? A covey of cops all ninja’d up carrying M-4’s in the neighbor’s back yard. I wandered around the corner to see what I could see and there were about 30 cops in various and sundry places around the block. I asked a neighbor who was standing there watching what was going on.

I don’t know why yet, but apparently my neighbors were suspected of being into something serious enough to warrant a sneak attack. The cops busted them and hauled them away. I don’t know what happened to their litter, hopefully they’ve got some extended family to take them in.

At any rate, it looks like we’ll be getting some new neighbors again sometime in the future.

If I ever hear any details about what crime they’re suspected of (as if there’s any real doubt…how’s that war going?), I’ll update.

Update: They apparently didn’t haul off the whole clan because there are 6 kids in the backyard screaming their fool heads off as we speak. Still haven’t seen anything on the local news about what went down.
