I have experienced the improbable

Consider this an anti-rant.

This morning, on the way to work, I got behind someone who actually seemed to know what he was doing behind the wheel.

When entering the highway, he actually used the acceleration lane to, you know, accelerate. He got up to highway speed and merged smoothly, rather than the standard tactic of pulling onto the highway while still barely going 40 or 45mph and expecting everyone to slow down to make room.

Then he decided the center lane traffic was moving too slowly and needed to pass. He waited for traffic to clear, signalled properly, entered the left lane, sped up to the flow of traffic, got past the slower traffic in the center lane, signalled again, returned to the center lane and resumed his desired speed.

Holy cow. It’s almost like this guy actually had some consideration for his fellow drivers.

I wanted to pull the guy over to shake his hand.

Always capable of noticing the cloud that the silver lining is attached to, I have to point out the negative aspect:

Driving properly and considerately is so rare around here that it stood out like a beacon in the night.

The standard mode of driving in this area is narcissistic, self-indulgent and downright hazardous. When someone actually does it right, it’s noteworthy…and that’s sad.
